Xcel Energy to Install 200MW of Battery Storage in Minnesota by 2028

Xcel Energy has big plans for Minnesota's energy future. The US utility aims to install up to 200MW of battery storage resources across the state by 2028. This significant investment follows the recent approval of a 150MW/600MWh battery storage system in Kalmar Township by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC).

The 'Capacity*Connect' proposal, as Xcel calls it, is designed to tackle rising electricity demand, ensure reliable service, optimize grid infrastructure, and support local employment. Each site will have approximately 1MW to 3MW of storage, with deployment scaled to meet grid demand and prioritizing local workers.

Batteries will be strategically located at local businesses, commercial or industrial sites, or nonprofit organizations. These hosts will receive direct payments for their participation. The 200MW figure is a stepping stone towards Xcel's larger goal of 600MW of energy storage by the end of 2030.

Xcel has already secured approval for a 1GWh project using Form Energy's multi-day iron-air battery storage technology near Becker, Minnesota. The utility will operate each battery storage asset, ensuring efficient management and integration into the grid.

Xcel Energy's ambitious battery storage plans for Minnesota are set to transform the state's energy landscape. By 2028, up to 200MW of battery storage resources will be installed, contributing to a more reliable, efficient, and locally supported grid.
