A69 Motorway Construction to Resume Following Court Decision
A legal battle over environmental concerns has concluded, paving the way for the resumption of the A69 motorway construction in France. The Administrative Court of Appeal in Toulouse has suspended earlier court judgments that had nullified the project's environmental authorizations.
The court ruling reinstates these authorizations temporarily, allowing the concessionaire, Atosca, and its partners to resume work on the project. Construction, which had been on hold since February, will soon recommence, with asphalt laying initiated in a few weeks.
Gautier Castan, co-manager of the Castan transport group, expressed his relief. His company had to lay off 12 employees in February due to the halt in construction. Castan is now contemplating hiring, with multiple temp agencies contacting him soon after the decision.
With the resumption of work, Atosca plans to repatriate approximately a thousand employees and numerous construction machines back to the Tarn region. The project's restart is expected to boost local economic activity through increased employment and the use of local resources and services.
However, the project's controversy and environmental concerns may persist, potentially affecting public perception and future challenges in its implementation. The A69 motorway construction, which had cost about €300-450 million before the halt, now risks missing its deadline of opening by the end of 2025.
