WNBA's Engelbert Responds to Collier's Criticism, Extension Likely for CBA Talks

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert has responded to recent comments by Napheesa Collier, a Minnesota Lynx star and WNBPA vice president, regarding the league's collective bargaining negotiations. Engelbert expressed respect for Collier and commitment to the players and the WNBA's future.

Collier's comments, made amidst ongoing negotiations between the WNBPA and the WNBA, suggest that a new CBA agreement before the October 31 deadline is unlikely. Both sides expect to miss the deadline and continue negotiations into the offseason. Engelbert had previously mentioned the option of extending the CBA deadline, which is not uncommon.

Collier criticized Engelbert for negligence in addressing officiating, compensation, and league state issues. She accused Engelbert of telling her that young stars like Caitlin Clark should be grateful for the WNBA's platform and that Clark earns $16 million off the court due to sponsorship deals. Chelsea Gray, an Aces star and WNBPA team rep, acknowledged the need for more work on the WNBA side to understand the players' value.

Collier's unique positions in both the union and a potential alternative league, Unrivaled, have drawn attention. Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 pro women's basketball league, was recently valued at $340 million after an investment from Bessemer Venture Partners.

The WNBA's collective bargaining negotiations continue with both sides expecting to miss the October 31 deadline. Players and the league remain committed to finding a resolution that addresses their concerns. Meanwhile, the potential alternative league, Unrivaled, gains traction with a significant investment.
