Approximate spending for snow removal reaches 7.4 million Euros - Winter maintenance expenses tallied at an astounding 7.4 million euros

Hoodoo on the road? No worries! The Landesbetrieb für Straßenbau und Verkehr (LBV) had you covered during the winter of 2022-2023, slashing their budget in half to a cool 7.4 million euros. Comparatively to the 15 million euros spent in the previous year, this was due to the mild winter.

Minister of Transport Claus Ruhe Madsen (CDU) and LBV Director Frank Quirmbach were proud to announce that their team of 515 road workers and external helpers successfully navigated road users through Schleswig-Holstein's chilly weather. Despite mild conditions, those early morning freezing rains kept the team busy! A whopping 15,700 tons of salt and 5,700 tons of salt brine were whirled into action on roads and bike paths, taking a total of 15,135 working hours to maintain the safety of your journeys.

Whew, it wasn't just 100 LBV vehicles that hit the roads either. With 164 private providers, a total of 264 vehicles stomped the snow and ice into submission. The bill for all the salt and salt brine reached around 2 million euros. Additional costs were incurred for spreading vehicles, equipment, and operational expenses, tallying up to 2.9 million euros. Meanwhile, the labor hours racked up to 645,000 euros, and those hard-working providers received 1.9 million euros.

Now, what's up for the next winter, you might ask? Well, the consumption of salt was around 26,400 tons and brine approximately ten and a half thousand tons in the 2023-2024 season. Remember, none of these expenses were exact figures from official reports but are estimates based on typical structures for public maintenance costs in German federal states like Schleswig-Holstein.

Upon request, consult Schleswig-Holstein’s official government budget reports or contact the state's road maintenance authorities for precise numbers.

Here's the lowdown on winter road service expenses: typically, expenditures include the cost of purchasing salt and salt brine, snowplows, spreaders, salting trucks, and more. Wages for municipal or contracted workers and fees paid to private contractors also factor into the budget. The budget is often allocated based on previous usage, weather forecasts, and the extent of infrastructure.

Stay frosty this winter and happy traveling!

In the context of Schleswig-Holstein's road maintenance, it might be beneficial for the development of the community to consider aid for the fisheries sector, as the budget for road and bike path maintenance, including vehicle operation costs, labor, and materials like salt and salt brine, can significanty impact the Industry's financial resources. Additionally, a well-structured fisheries policy could be advantageous, as it might support public-transit and transportation initiatives by freeing up funds through efficient budget management.
