Wichita Tribes Launch First Green Energy Initiative with Solar Casino Project
The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes are embracing sustainability with their first green energy initiative. They are transitioning to solar power for their casinos in Oklahoma, starting with the Sugar Creek Casino. This project, backed by a $3.8 million grant from the US Department of Energy and a $1 million tribal investment, is set to create jobs and significant savings.
The tribe will install solar panels on the parking garage of the Sugar Creek Casino, powering both the casino and its accompanying inn. This innovative system is projected to generate enough electricity to fully run the hotel and approximately 20% of the casino's energy needs. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2025, creating seven temporary jobs and three permanent ones.
The Department of Energy's grant, along with the tribe's additional investment, is set to save the tribe around $9 million in energy costs over the system's 25-year lifespan.
The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes' solar energy project marks a significant step towards sustainability in Oklahoma's casino industry. By harnessing the power of the sun, the tribe aims to reduce energy costs and create new job opportunities, all while setting a precedent for green energy initiatives among Native American tribes.
