The latest scoop on Romania's presidential hopefuls reveals a fascinating twist: frontrunners in the polls aren't the richest contenders. Instead, the wealthiest presidential aspirants are the independent hopefuls, with party-backed candidates lagging far behind.
John-Ion Banu-Muscel, the stealthy independent runner with unknown ties, boasts an impressive real estate portfolio, including apartments in Bucharest and Florida, USA, and a lavish house in McCormick, South Carolina. He also owns properties in Romania and the US, along with a precious painting, bronze statuettes and items worth a combined USD 55,000, multiple bank accounts, and significant investments in the US. His diverse income stream includes earnings as a manager at Ocean Test, doctor, US pension, and farm income.
According to Euronews Romania, Victor Ponta, the former prime minister who turned independent, is the second wealthiest presidential candidate. Ponta's treasure trove includes three swanky apartments in Bucharest, Istanbul, and the United Arab Emirates, luxury timepieces worth EUR 20,000, and an impressive bank balance.
Daniel Funeriu, the ambitious former education minister, rounds out the wealthiest trio. Funeriu's dazzling assets consist of two Romanian apartments, a palatial abode in Germany, large agricultural plots in Timis Burn, a collection of pricey jewels, an imposing bank balance, Japanese deposits, and investment funds.
The fortunes of Crin Antonescu, the candidate of the governing alliance, have seen a significant decline. In stark contrast to the wealthiest few, Antonescu had no income in 2024. Much of his property is either owned by his wife, former MEP and European Commissioner, Adina Vălean, or is jointly owned. Adina Vălean's jewels, bank accounts, and government bonds add to Antonescu's wealth, despite his financial struggles.
Nicușor Dan, the daring Bucharest mayor, owns a sprawling 7,000 square-meter plot in Predeal, but resides in a rented flat in Bucharest. Dan's other modest assets include a 1986 car, bank accounts, loans, and donations to his campaign. He formerly made RON 296,000 as mayor in 2024.
Elena Lasconi, the ambitious USR leader, owns valuable properties, including seven plots of land, three apartments, a residence, and a 2007 Opel vehicle. Lasconi also has two hefty bank loans, while her husband earned a significant salary as an advisor in the Chamber of Deputies.
George Simion, the enigmatic frontrunner credited with approximately 30% of the votes, possesses no properties. Instead, his wealth is derived primarily from gifts received at his son's christening and a generous donation for his campaign.
