Walmart inaugurates long-awaited Supercenter – a four-year hiatus ended.

Ready to Roll with Walmart's New-Gen Supercenter

Walmart takes a bold leap forward with its modernization plan, cracking open the doors to its long-awaited Supercenter – the first to pop up in four years – in Cypress, Texas, as announced on Wednesday. This retail juggernaut is a fine example of the "Store of the Future" concept, cooked up by the retail titan.

The new kid on the block comes packed with a full-service fuel station, an updated vision care center, and digital shelf labels galore, according to the press release. But that's not all – it caters to the tastes of the Texas crowd with a Hispanic bakery section and a fresh tortilla maker.

Walmart isn't holding back; the company has plans to open a whopping four more Supercenters across the U.S. by 2025, cherry on top of converting two existing stores into full-blown Supercenters.

John Furner, Walmart U.S. CEO, shared his enthusiasm in a statement, declaring, "This store was built with the customer in mind. It's part of a larger transformation happening across our stores as we reimagine what shopping looks like for the future."

The Cypress Supercenter comes decked out with features designed to cater to customers' needs, such as scheduling TV mounting, updating registries, and booking tire installation through the retailer's app. Plus, there are "elevated departments" focusing on Fashion, Baby, Home, Pets, and even a Dunkin'.

Furner hinted at Walmart expanding its physical footprint during an investor day in April, with plans to open a dozen more stores this year, adding to the existing fleet of about 4,600 U.S. locations.

But Walmart's expansion doesn't stop at America's borders. In April, the retailer also announced a significant investment in its Mexican Supercenter efforts, promising to open new stores under the Bodega Aurrera, Sam's Club, Walmart Supercenters, and Walmart Express banners, to the tune of $6 billion.

While Walmart's physical stores remain a significant slice of its business, its e-commerce growth is nothing to sneeze at. In fact, online sales are expected to rake in a profit this year, and Q1 e-commerce has already broken even, as reported at the investor day.

As Walmart's stores across the country continue to reel in record-breaking sales, particularly in the grocery sector, the business segment brought in an astounding $276 billion net sales in fiscal year 2025, representing a hefty 59% of the retailer's annual net sales of $462 billion.
