Volkswagen's Financial Chief Paints a Grim Picture!

Volkswagen (VW) is facing a challenging period, with increasing competition from Chinese automakers and the impact of US tariffs causing concern for the German car manufacturer. In an interview with the "Braunschweigische Zeitung," VW's Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Arno Antlitz, discussed opportunities and risks on a rapidly changing market.

Antlitz expressed worry about the loss of competitiveness of German production compared to Chinese automakers in a saturated European market. He highlighted that the sluggish business in China, where local manufacturers have gained the upper hand, has led to price wars and a significant decline in VW's operating profit. This has compounded challenges from US tariffs and restructuring efforts, resulting in a 29-41% drop in profits year-over-year across automotive segments.

The CFO also emphasized the high uncertainty about further tariff developments and their potential impact on earnings. Despite growth opportunities in electric vehicles, Antlitz stressed that VW must fully implement its restructuring program to avoid failure, underscoring the critical need to adapt to the competitive pressure from Chinese automakers and external tariff-related obstacles.

Antlitz believes that the US tariffs will remain in place and anticipates Chinese competition could become a problem in Germany within one to two years. He noted that VW has been losing market share in important markets, and the company has halved its production capacity in Germany to restructure and cut costs.

The interview also contained additional messages from Antlitz to VW's workforce, emphasizing the need for the company to enhance the competitiveness of its German factories. Furthermore, Antlitz revealed his concerns about a specific scenario that could impact VW, without disclosing further details.

Thousands of VW vehicles are affected by a major tech issue in one of its subsidiaries, adding to the challenges the company is facing in recovering from a significant crisis. Despite these difficulties, Antlitz remains optimistic about VW's future and the opportunities that lie ahead in the ever-evolving automotive industry.
