Vietnam, Laos Strengthen Ties with New Road, Hospital, and Investment
Vietnam and Laos are strengthening their ties with several cooperative projects underway. The Ministry of Finance is studying a route from Vientiane to Thanh Thủy, while the Laos-Vietnam Friendship Hospital is set to open in late 2025. Meanwhile, investment and aid projects are progressing smoothly.
The Ministry of Finance is exploring the feasibility of a road route from Vientiane to Thanh Thủy in Phú Thọ, with the Ministry of Transport of Laos investigating a potential railway line for the same stretch. The Laos-Vietnam Friendship Hospital, a symbol of cooperation, is scheduled to open on December 19, 2025.
Vietnamese businesses have shown confidence in the Laotian market, investing in 274 projects with a total registered capital of $5.82 billion and realised capital of about $3 billion. Aid-funded projects are also progressing well, maintaining their planned schedules.
In the first eight months of 2025, Vietnam's investment in Laos reached $322 million, a sixfold increase from the same period in 2024. Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Chí Dũng chaired a meeting on October 3, 2025, to discuss these cooperative projects. Two government-funded projects are expected to complete in 2025, with four more slated for 2026.
The feasibility studies for the Vientiane to Thanh Thủy route, along with the upcoming hospital inauguration, demonstrate the commitment to enhancing connectivity and cooperation between Vietnam and Laos. The significant increase in investment and the progress of aid-funded projects further underscore the fidelity of their relationship.
