Verizon in Talks to Boost 5G Network with EchoStar Spectrum Deal
Verizon Communications is in talks to acquire valuable wireless spectrum from EchoStar, potentially reducing costs and strengthening its 5G network. Analysts at BNP-Paribas view the deal as neutral for Verizon, slightly positive for T-Mobile, and slightly negative for US cable players.
The discussions centre around EchoStar's AWS-3 licences, which are crucial for carrying 5G signals. EchoStar has valued its 'spare' spectrum at a hefty $9.8 billion. Verizon aims to buy this spectrum now, avoiding uncertainty in the FCC's planned auction for mid-2026. If successful, Verizon would join AT&T and SpaceX as recent buyers of EchoStar's wireless spectrum licences. The precise date of the AWS-3 license marketing can be found in official FCC filings or press releases from EchoStar or Verizon Communications around the time of the transaction.
EchoStar expects to hold $24.1 billion (€20.5bn) in cash after using the sale proceeds to repay debt. The potential deal could help Verizon reduce overall costs and solidify its position in the 5G market.
