The British automaker Land Rover has introduced a new performance-oriented version of its iconic Defender, dubbed the Defender Okta. This latest model is designed to take on challenging terrains with its robust exterior and powerful engine.

Land Rover has given the Defender Okta a distinctive look, with blistered wheel arches, functional rims, a deeper grille, and flecks of chopped carbon fibre. Inside, the cabin features Land Rover's Body and Soul Seat (BASS), which sends haptic pulses through the seat in harmony with the bass of music. The interior has also undergone changes, with more chopped carbon fibre and new, seamless, performance seats.

Under the hood, the Defender Okta is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine derived from BMW. This engine, tuned to 635 horsepower, provides the Defender Okta with the necessary power to tackle various terrains, including smooth tarmac roads, corrugated gravel tracks, and boulder crawls in remote areas of South Africa. The Defender Okta was indeed tested on the rough and rutted roads of South Africa, demonstrating its off-road capabilities.

The Defender Okta is wider, taller, and tougher than the standard Defender, and it is equipped with a 6D Dynamic air suspension system. This suspension system reduces body roll and pitch, allowing the Defender Okta to handle off-road challenges with ease. Matt Becker, vehicle engineering director at Jaguar Land Rover, mentioned that the 6D suspension technology allows for greater articulation and removes any torque or friction.

When paired with the Goodyear Duratrac tyres, the Defender Okta can handle almost anything the South African bush has to offer. However, while the Defender Okta is engineered to cope in the most extreme circumstances, many of its owners may never use it off-road.

The Defender Okta is priced at £145,300 for the standard model, after all the Edition One Oktas have been sold. In 2023, more Defenders were sold than all Velars, Evoques, and Discovery Sports combined, indicating a strong demand for this iconic vehicle.

The Defender Okta joins the ranks of other performance off-roaders like the Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato, Porsche 911 Dakar, and Ford F-150 Raptor, offering a unique blend of luxury, performance, and off-road capabilities. The Defender, first introduced in 2020, continues to be a popular choice among car enthusiasts worldwide.
