Updated Traffic Regulations and Restrictions Implemented
The German authorities have announced changes to the traffic management on the A4 motorway, affecting road users between the Cologne-Klettenberg and Cologne-Eifeltor junctions. These changes are scheduled to take place over the next two weekends.
Starting from Friday, April 4th, at 21:00, the A4 in the direction of Olpe will be reduced to a single lane between the Cologne-Klettenberg and Cologne-Eifeltor junctions. On the same night, the A4 in the direction of Olpe at the Cologne-Klettenberg junction will have both the exit and entry lanes closed.
These changes are part of a larger reconstruction project aimed at protecting the DB crossing structure 'Eifeltor,' which has shown increasing damage. The structure, built in 1956 and widened in 1988, crosses the A4 over the Deutsche Bahn tracks near the Cologne-Eifeltor marshalling yard.
In addition to these night closures, there may be occasional daytime closures for preparatory works before the night closure. The new traffic management will continue to be implemented between the junctions Cologne-Klettenberg and Cologne-Eifeltor.
Heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes will be directed to the right in both directions. For road users heading towards Aachen, this means that two out of three lanes will be available, while the third lane will be reserved for heavy goods vehicles. Conversely, for road users heading towards Olpe, all lanes will be used for heavy goods vehicles, and lighter vehicles will be directed to the right.
The speed limit on the structure will remain at 40 km/h. It is important to note that two out of three lanes will also be available to road users in both directions until further notice.
The reconstruction work causing full closures on the A4 between the Cologne-Klettenberg and Cologne-Eifeltor interchanges will take place from Friday, September 12, 2025, at 10:00 PM until Monday, September 22, 2025, at 5:00 AM. These closures will occur over several weekends within this period.
The measure is intended to directly relieve the structure and ensure its continued safety for all road users. The authorities urge road users to plan their journeys accordingly and to expect delays during these periods.
