Unregulated Transportation Entanglement: Dangerous Departures Abound

Rocky Mountain National Park's Trail Ridge Road will likely remain shut through the Memorial Day weekend, as lingering winter weather persists, posing challenges for snowplow drivers along its U.S. 34 segment. The road, famous for being the nation's highest continuous paved route, has seen setbacks due to drifting snow, low visibility from wind, and a thick layer of ice beneath the snow, especially at elevations above 10,000 feet, according to the National Park Service.

Upon closing annually during the winter snow season, the road typically reopens in late May. However, the National Park Service expects more snow and freezing nights above 10,000 feet this weekend, hindering clearing efforts.

Historically, Trail Ridge Road opens by late May, weather conditions permitting. Last year, it reopened on May 31, but as of late May 2025, no specific reopening date, beyond its closure over Memorial Day weekend, has been announced due to ongoing winter weather challenges.

The ongoing winter weather in Rocky Mountain National Park might delay the annual opening of Trail Ridge Road, traditionally reopening by late May in optimal weather conditions. The closure could potentially have an impact on industries such as finance, transportation, and tourism, given the road's significance as a major tourist attraction.
