Underground Railway Station at Nollendorfplatz to Shut Down for a Span of Four Months
In an unprecedented move for Berlin's public transport system, the Berlin Transport Company (BVG) has announced that repair works at Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station will take place from January to April 2026. This four-month closure will cause significant disruptions to the U1, U3, and U4 lines, marking the most significant restriction to Berlin's underground network in decades.
The closure is due to the deterioration of the ceiling at the Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station. Despite the installation of steel supports and wooden beams to reinforce the structure, the ongoing structural failure has necessitated immediate action. According to BVG, a grade of 4.0 and beyond requires an immediate closure of a tunnel or bridge due to the risk of collapse. The condition grade of the ceiling of the U1 line at Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station was 3.2 in 2021, considered "satisfactory", but has since worsened.
During the repair works, three of the four lines (U1, U2, and U4) will be completely suspended. The U2 line will run normally during the construction period at Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station. The U3 line will not be suspended, but the service will terminate at Spichernstraße, meaning passengers will need to transfer to other lines for further travel.
To mitigate the impact on commuters, BVG will likely operate a replacement bus service and encourage passengers to use other U-Bahn lines, such as the U2, which passes through Nollendorfplatz on overhead tracks and will not be affected. Trains on the U1 line will run in two separate sections: between Wittenbergplatz and Uhlandstraße in the west, and between Gleisdreieck and Warschauer Straße in the east. The U4 service will be completely halted during the closure period.
Commuters are advised to utilise S-Bahn lines for longer journeys and transfer to undisturbed U-Bahn lines. It is also recommended to plan ahead and check for updates on the BVG website or app for the latest schedules and service changes.
This repair work at Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station, which will affect the U1, U3, and U4 lines, causing disrupted service, is the first major repair work on Berlin's underground network since many years. The repair works are anticipated to be completed by the end of 2026.

The ongoing repair works at Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station from January to April 2026, due to the deterioration of the ceiling, will significantly impact the finance industry by potentially causing delays in commuting for employees who depend on public-transit, particularly those using the U1, U3, and U4 lines. To lessen the disruptions, BVG is planning to operate a replacement bus service and encourage passengers to use the U2 line, which will run normally during the construction period, as well as other U-Bahn lines and S-Bahn lines for longer journeys.
