Ukraine Strikes Major Russian Oil Refinery, Causing Explosion
Ukrainian forces have struck a major Russian oil refinery, causing an explosion and evacuation. The targeted facility, 'Orsknefteorgsintez', is located in the town of Orsk, Orenburg region, 1400 km from Ukraine. The attack is part of Ukraine's strategy to damage Russia's economy by targeting its oil and gas industry.
Long-range drones of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) hit the refinery today, October 3. The refinery, one of Russia's largest, has a capacity of 6.6 million tons of oil per year and produces various fuels, including gasoline and diesel. Following the strike, an explosion occurred, leading to the evacuation of the site and thick black smoke rising into the sky. The attack comes after a summer of Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and pipelines, causing fuel crises and logistical issues. The SBU has stated that these actions are part of its efforts to inflict serious damage on the Russian economy.
The targeted refinery, 'Orsknefteorgsintez', is one of Russia's leading oil refineries, with four primary oil processing units. It is situated 1400 km from Ukraine, in the town of Orsk, Orenburg region. The attack was reported by Andrij Kowalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, confirming Ukrainian involvement. Local authorities in Orsk have urged residents not to panic due to the incident.
The drone attack on 'Orsknefteorgsintez' refinery is the latest in a series of Ukrainian strikes targeting Russian oil infrastructure. With nearly 40% of Russia's refinery capacity already idle due to previous attacks, today's incident is expected to further disrupt Russia's fuel supply and economy.
