UK, Germany Clash Over Energy Security: Gas Plans Spark Climate Concerns

The UK and Germany are at odds over energy security and climate goals, with environmental groups raising concerns. While ministers aim to secure energy supply, critics argue that increasing gas dependency is costly and extends reliance on fossil fuels.

Dr Doug Parr of Greenpeace UK contends that boosting gas dependency undermines both energy security and climate objectives. Jess Ralston from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit labels the government's approach to energy security as flawed and outdated.

Germany plans to construct up to 118 new gas-fired power plants by 2035, with capacities up to 36 gigawatts, to ensure electricity supply. The UK, heavily reliant on gas, faces supply disruptions and price hikes due to its lack of storage. Environmental groups decry these plans, deeming them expensive, insecure, and prolonging fossil fuel reliance.

Ministers in both countries aim to combat energy price rises and maintain a reliable energy source on low renewable output days. New gas power stations will be net zero ready and capable of converting to low-carbon alternatives. However, they will run less frequently as more low-carbon technologies are deployed.

The UK and Germany's plans to increase gas capacity raise concerns among environmental groups. While ministers strive for energy security, critics warn of the costs and continued reliance on fossil fuels. The future of these projects remains uncertain as the transition to net zero continues.
