UK Gambling Study: Average Bet £390 Monthly, High-Value Bettors Spend £452
A recent study by the Department of Trust (DoT) has shed light on UK gambling habits, revealing that the average bettor spends £390 (£479) a month on leisure activities, with gambling being one aspect. The research covered leisure spending of over £1.4 billion (£1.7 billion).
Between April 1, 2023, and April 1, 2024, consumers deposited £150.8 million (£185.5 million) to UK-licensed gambling operators. The DoT conducted a 12-month analysis of bank transaction data from 304,022 active UK gamblers. High-value gamblers, classified as those making deposits over £150 (£184), spent an average of £452.38 (£556.33) a month on leisure activities, with gambling accounting for 42.15% of their total expenditure. In contrast, the average gambler allocates 10.69% of their leisure budget to gambling each month. Food delivery and media subscriptions topped the list of expenditures for the average bettor.
The Gambling Commission announced its first comprehensive study of the black market in October 2023. The first findings of the black market study, conducted by the DoT, are expected to be released to the public in spring 2024.
The DoT's study provides valuable insights into UK gambling trends. While gambling is a significant part of leisure spending for high-value gamblers, it is not the primary expenditure for the average bettor. As the black market study progresses, further understanding of the gambling landscape is anticipated.
