U3 Extension to Mexikoplatz Begins September 2026
The construction of the U3 extension from Krumme Lanke to Mexikoplatz is set to begin on September 1, 2026. This major project, which includes the reconstruction of the Waisentunnel between U5 and U8 lines, is expected to cost at least €160.5 million, not including additional expenses for turnaround and parking tracks, and parts of the station construction. The tender for this project will be published on March 1, 2026.
The plan approval decision for the U3 extension is expected in December 2026, following the publication of the tender. However, local resistance, such as the 'Save the Mexikoplatz' initiative, may legally challenge this decision. The reconstruction of the Waisentunnel is planned to start construction at the end of 2025, with an expected opening in 2028. The decision about the planning approval for this part of the project is anticipated earlier, likely in 2025.
The total cost of the project will be higher than the initial €160.5 million, as it also includes expenses for turnaround and parking tracks, and parts of the station construction.
The U3 extension project, including the Waisentunnel reconstruction, is set to significantly improve public transportation in the area. Despite potential legal challenges, the project is expected to proceed as planned, with construction beginning in late 2025 and 2026, and completion anticipated by 2028.
