German Foreign Minister Wadephul Calls for Peace and Mutual Understanding Ahead of Washington Visit

In the lead-up to his inaugural visit to the United States, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has urged both nations to address ongoing trade disputes amicably. Speaking on Tuesday from Berlin, Wadephul emphasized the importance of forging stable partnerships and fostering trust in an interconnected world.

Wadephul acknowledged that Germany is a major investor in the U.S., with over 6,000 German companies employing nearly one million Americans across all states. He reiterated his support for the European Commission as they negotiate a balanced solution with the U.S. that removes unnecessary trade barriers and promotes fair trade.

As the EU and U.S. continue trade discussions, Wadephul will engage his counterpart Marco Rubio and other American officials during his Washington visit. In addition to trade-related topics, Wadephul intends to focus on the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip, advocating for a ceasefire, and a sustainable peace in both regions.

Regarding the Ukraine conflict, Wadephul expressed a desire to intensify diplomatic pressure on Russia to return to the negotiating table, thereby fostering serious negotiations and resolving the crisis. He emphasized the EU's readiness to increase defense spending as a means of enhancing Euro-Atlantic security.

In the Middle East, Wadephul emphasized the need for a two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He emphasized the context of the Gaza Strip situation, with the U.S. and Germany being major supporters of Israel, which faces increasing criticism for its military actions in the region.
