U.S. tariff increases viewed as regrettable by India
The United States has imposed additional tariffs on Indian imports of Russian oil, a move that has raised concerns within the Indian foreign ministry. The tariffs, amounting to an additional 25% ad valorem duty, will take effect on August 27, 2025, and come on top of a previous 25% tariff, bringing the total to 50%.
The tariffs are part of the US's efforts to strengthen the existing sanctions framework and deter countries from aiding Russia through oil imports, as Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine. The Trump Administration issued the Executive Order that enforces these tariffs.
India, however, has maintained that its imports of Russian oil are based on market factors and aimed at ensuring the energy security of its 1.4 billion people. The foreign ministry has criticized the tariffs as "extremely unfortunate", "unfair", "unjustified", and "unreasonable".
The foreign ministry's statement also expresses concern over the tariffs, stating that they are against the interest of India's people. The ministry further condemned the tariffs, asserting that they are not in line with the national interest of India.
It is important to note that the tariffs are not specifically targeted at India's Russian oil purchases. Several other countries are also taking similar actions, making the tariffs not unique to India. The foreign ministry also points out that the actions taken by several countries, including India, are in their own national interest.
The tariffs come at a time when India is looking to expand its energy partnerships, particularly with countries like Russia, to secure its energy needs. The foreign ministry's condemnation of the tariffs underscores India's stance on maintaining its sovereign right to make decisions in its national interest.

The foreign ministry's criticism of the tariffs reflects India's concern that the increased finance costs caused by the tariffs are against the interest of its people. The ministry also asserts that the energy industry reliant on Russian oil imports is not aligned with India's national interest.
