Germany's newest Transport Minister, Patrick Schneider, is keen to level the playing field for various modes of transportation. "We're all about catering to the folks, the economy," Schneider said in his government address on Thursday, addressing the Bundestag. "Rather than shooting for vague objectives, we're aiming for tangible improvements across the board."
Schneider pointed out that numerous bridges, tunnels, roads, and rails are in a sorry state and require immediate attention. The fresh government promises to take on this "renovation crunch" by setting up a special infrastructure fund. Yet, the nuts and bolts - "the fund allocation, specific earmarks, and responsibilities" - have yet to be ironed out.
In essence, Schneider champions "preserving what we've got before jumping into new projects." He also stressed that climate goals are set to be "explicitly" upheld. To this end, a team of scientists, associations, and experts will be assembled "without delay" to ensure they're part of the process from the get-go.
On the rail crisis front, Schneider mentioned that renovating around 40 major rail corridors, a task initiated by the traffic light coalition, will push forward. However, he plans to review each case to see if full closure is truly necessary for necessary renovations.
As for cars, "open-mindedness" is where it's at, said Schneider. But the emphasis is on "pushing forward and taking responsibility in electric vehicles." When it comes to air traffic, he promised a reduction in taxes, fees, and charges.
