The Teamsters are facing a unique situation with Costco, as the company's reported net profit of over $7 billion in 2024 suggests the ability to meet the union's demands. This disparity between profits and compensation is a significant point of contention.

The strike authorization vote does not guarantee a strike will occur. Strike authorization votes are a common tactic used by unions prior to contract expirations. In fact, in June 2023, 97% of Teamsters voted to authorize a strike at UPS, their largest employer. However, two weeks before the strike deadline, the union reached a labor deal, averting a strike at UPS.

Amazon, on the other hand, did not recognize the Teamsters as union representatives during a strike that occurred just before Christmas. Despite the Teamsters staging a strike, Amazon refused to negotiate or recognize the strikers as employees. The workers returned to work the day after Christmas.

The union has already begun organizing practice pickets to prepare for a potential strike.
