THW Volunteers from Bremerhaven Aid in Augsburg Flood Relief
Two skilled volunteers from the Technical Relief Agency (THW) in Bremerhaven have joined the flood relief efforts in Augsburg. They are part of the Oil Pollution Control Unit from the Regional Association Bremen, Lower Saxony, and are assisting in separating heating oil from contaminated water.
The THW volunteers, who specialise in oil spill management in their home association, are now working at a newly established separation site in Augsburg. They are coordinating a team of 45 specialists from other THW regional associations, utilising a computer-controlled separation system provided by the THW in Bavaria.
The oil-water mixture they are dealing with comes from flooded basements containing heating oil tanks, pumped out by the local fire department. Their mission is to prevent the contaminated water from entering sewage systems and causing further environmental pollution.
The two THW volunteers from Bremerhaven began their work on June 5, 2024, and are expected to remain in the flood area until approximately the beginning of next week. This interregional cooperation is a testament to the uniform structure of the THW's specialist groups nationwide, enabling a swift and effective response to the flood crisis in Augsburg.
