Lee Jung-jae shared with Netflix's Tudum that his character has undergone significant changes since Season 1. “I had numerous chances to showcase the character's good heart in Season 1,” he said. “However, in Season 2, due to certain circumstances, there were fewer opportunities for that [ qualities ] to surface."

What Will "Squid Game" Season 2 Be About?
“Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 decided against going to the States and returns with a new resolve,” the official Season 2 synopsis reads. “Gi-hun once more dives into the enigmatic survival game, embarking on a new life-or-death game with new participants drawn to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.”
At Netflix's Fall Edit event in November, showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk explained why Gi-hun returned to Squid Game after barely surviving the first time and winning the grand prize of 45.6 billion Korean Won.
“He wants to return to a ‘normal’ so-called life. [But] there’s something inside him that has already been broken, where he cannot return to the way he was before,” he explained. Although Gi-hun wants to reconnect with his daughter, “he understands ... that he has changed in a way where [that’s] no longer possible.”
