Craft workers in various trades, as per a new study by the Baden-Württemberg chambers of crafts, are found to be competitive with wages in similar industries. The researchers argue that generalizations about low craft wages are invalid.

Competitive Wages in Germany's Trade Sector

A recent study by the Ludwig-Fröler Institute for Trade Sciences has found that the trade sector in Germany offers competitive wages, with some roles matching or even surpassing those in other sectors.

The study, which evaluated over 8,000 data sets on the wages of over 2,800 trade businesses in a representative survey, revealed that training wages in the trade sector are mostly over 1,000 euros in the first year.

Tilers, masons, chimney sweeps, or installers, for example, earn between 21 and 23 euros per hour. Masters in the trade sector can earn as much as technicians and engineers, with top wages for masters reaching 7,500 euros for masons and concrete builders, and up to 8,000 euros for electrical engineers.

The authors of the study concluded that "general statements about low trade wages" were not valid. In fact, the study found that there are no significant differences in training wages compared to other sectors.

However, while the trade sector offers competitive wages, they tend to be lower than many specialized sectors, especially for those with master’s degrees. The average gross salaries in Germany range from about €2,600 to €8,500 per month depending on sector and role, with the highest salaries often in specialized professional or technical fields.

For individuals with a master’s degree, wages are generally higher in academic/professional sectors than in many traditional trade jobs, though exceptions exist when trades involve strong specialization or growing demand.

Peter Haas, CEO of Handwerk BW, commented that trade jobs pay competitive wages from the start compared to other sectors. He also noted that many trade sectors regularly pay 19 euros per hour and more for journeymen.

The study commissioned by eight trade chambers in the region found that construction and renovation professions offer competitive wages. In particular, the average wages for trade masters were consistently above 4,000 euros gross per month.

In conclusion, while trade jobs in Germany are competitive and growing in pay compared to some sectors, particularly for skilled trades and manufacturing, they usually still offer lower wages than sectors that heavily reward advanced academic qualifications such as law, medical technician roles, or some consulting and IT specialties. The amount of the wage depends on factors such as the trade, the turnover of the business, and the qualifications and professional experience of the employee.

Economic and social policy can be influenced by the competitive wages offered in Germany's trade sector, as these wages are often comparable to those in other sectors, with some positions even surpassing them. Prioritizing personal-finance education and career development in trade roles may attract more individuals to these fields, as finance and business skills are essential for success in this sector.

Businesses in the trade sector can further boost their competitiveness by offering competitive wages, which not only attracts skilled workers but also contributes to the overall growth and success of the industry. This, in turn, could lead to a stronger national economy and a higher standard of living for employees in these industries, making trade jobs a viable and attractive career choice for many individuals.
