Tesla's Model Y electric vehicles are now on sale at every Tesla showroom across China.
Tesla has introduced a new variant of its Model Y lineup in China – the Model Y L. The six-seat electric SUV, priced at RMB 339,000 ($47,210), is now available at all Tesla showrooms across the country. Deliveries are expected to begin in September.
The launch of the Model Y L is part of Tesla's strategy to boost sales for the Model Y in China. The media review embargo on the Model Y L was lifted following its official launch, and the majority of reviewers have given positive feedback.
The Model Y L is a dual-motor all-wheel drive vehicle, equipped with an 82.0-kWh ternary lithium battery pack from South Korea's LG Energy Solution (LGES). It can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 4.5 seconds, and boasts a CLTC range of 751 kilometers, making it the longest-range model in the Model Y lineup.
In China, the five-seat Model Y has two variants: the entry-level rear-wheel drive version and the long-range all-wheel drive version. The starting prices for these variants are RMB 263,500 and RMB 313,500, respectively.
The entry of the Model Y L into the Chinese market puts pressure on local rivals, particularly BYD. Tesla's China strategy with the six-seat Model Y L targets the same segment, potentially impacting BYD's market share. In January-July, the retail sales of the Model Y in China were 202,257 units, down 17.15 percent year-on-year.
With the launch of the Model Y L, Tesla continues to expand its presence in the Chinese market, offering consumers more choices and challenging the status quo in the electric vehicle industry.
