Tesla's Robotaxi Service Debuts in the Bay Area

Tesla's much-anticipated Robotaxi service has made its way to the Bay Area of Silicon Valley. The service, which was initially launched in Austin, Texas, is now available in the SF Bay Area, as announced by Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, on X.

The Robotaxi service operates within a large geofenced area covering much of the Bay Area, including Marin, San Francisco, the East Bay, and stretching south to San Jose. This geofenced area is significantly larger than what Tesla began with in Austin, less than 40 days before the latest expansion.

The service is currently invite-only, with select Tesla owners receiving invitations to try the service. Riders can download the app and request a ride, with the cost of each trip reported to be around $4.20, as it was in Austin.

For regulatory reasons, the Robotaxis currently require human safety drivers seated in the driver's seat who can take control if needed. Tesla has a transportation service permit from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for limited employee-focused rides but has not yet secured permits for a fully commercial Robotaxi service open to the public.

The company is, however, working towards this goal. Tesla's internal goal is to have the Robotaxi service available to half of the US's population by the end of 2025. The expansion into the Bay Area is seen as a significant milestone ahead of broader public access and potential international expansion in 2026.

Riz Akhtar, a mechanical engineer and the founder of carloop based in Melbourne, has been following Tesla's progress closely. Akhtar, who drives a red Tesla Model 3 and has a passion for cars, particularly EVs, wants to help reduce transport emissions in Australia.

The expansion of Tesla's Robotaxi trial service into the Bay Area is expected within one to two months, according to Elon Musk. Tesla is also reportedly making progress in Arizona, with its Robotaxi approvals in the works there.
