Temporary shutdown of Sharjah road due to ongoing Etihad Rail construction work announced
In the heart of 2025, the city of Sharjah will experience some changes as part of the Etihad Rail construction. The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has announced several road closures to facilitate the rail project's progress.
From July 1 to August 30, sections connecting Mleiha Road and the Sharjah Ring Road near University Bridge will be closed for two months. This closure is essential for the construction of the Etihad Rail, according to reports published on the Khaleej Times website.
On a smaller scale, University Road and Distributor Road towards Sharjah at Al Badi Bridge will be closed from midnight on August 9 until 11 am on August 11. During this period, traffic will be diverted via the Al Siyouh Suburb Tunnel towards Eastern Maliha Road.
Another significant closure will take place from August 7 to 24, affecting the stretch from Corniche Road to Al Intifada Road. This closure is part of broader infrastructure upgrades, including traffic flow, utilities, and safety improvements, aimed at enhancing the transport network in Sharjah, which aligns with the rail infrastructure developments.
These road closures are implemented with alternative routes and traffic diversions to lessen disruption while advancing the Etihad Rail infrastructure, expected to open in 2026. It's important to note that these closures do not provide new information about the timeline or scope of the Etihad Rail project or any new stations confirmed for the project.
Two stations have already been confirmed for the Etihad Rail project, which is expected to connect all the emirates and extend to neighbouring Gulf countries upon completion in 2026. The project aims to revolutionise transportation within the region, making travel more efficient and sustainable.
As always, motorists are advised to plan their routes carefully and allow extra travel time during these construction periods. For the latest updates and information, we recommend checking the Khaleej Times website regularly.
