Sustainability's future is spearheaded by SM and DOST
The SM Sustainability Expo (SUSTEX 2025), held from August 29 to 30, was a two-day event themed 'Innovation for Environmental Stewardship.' The Expo marked a significant collaboration between SM Prime Holdings, Inc., SM Supermalls, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), ARISE Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies, and various government agencies and private sector partners.
The Expo opened with a ceremonial 'Beat of Sustainability' performance, led by DOST Secretary Renato Solidum and SM Prime Executive Committee Chairman Hans T. Sy, along with other dignitaries who played the angklung. This performance symbolized harmony and collective action in advancing sustainability.
Over 50 exhibitors participated in the Expo, showcasing a variety of initiatives. SM Prime and SM GUUN showcased their 'Waste-Free Future' campaign, while ARISE Philippines highlighted their disaster resilience efforts. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) presented their Loop Forward Program, and DOST-FPRDI showcased sustainable Lalang Pandan furniture. Other exhibitors included essential oils from Philippine plants, bamboo musical instruments, and innovations in electric vehicle technology from DOST-CHRG.
SM Supermalls, one of Southeast Asia's largest mall developers, continues to evolve to lead in sustainable development. They integrate green design, energy efficiency, disaster resilience, and environmental stewardship into their 88 malls in the Philippines. The company aims to create inclusive spaces that enrich communities, support climate action, and ensure a better, more sustainable future for generations of Filipino shoppers.
Hans T. Sy, in his opening remarks, emphasized that sustainability lies at the heart of SM's business and highlighted the importance of partnerships. Renato Solidum echoed this view, noting that SUSTEX demonstrates how innovation and science can strengthen national resilience and drive a circular economy. He also mentioned the DOST's initiative, OneDOST4U: Solutions and Opportunities for All, which ensures that the science, technologies, and innovations developed are accessible to businesses, communities, and every Filipino.
The idea to host SUSTEX 2025 at the SMX Convention Center Aura, Taguig, originated from the collaboration between local government units and sustainability-focused organizations, with key participation from environmental NGOs, industry leaders, and academic institutions.
The Expo featured interactive sessions, product showcases, and knowledge exchanges, reinforcing SM's ongoing commitment to sustainability. In conclusion, Hans T. Sy emphasized that SUSTEX 2025 should be more than an event, serving as a hub for practical solutions and a reminder that business can be a force for good. The Expo served as a catalyst for action, reinforcing SM's commitment to its sustainability roadmap, including the Waste-Free Future campaign and Net Zero by 2040.
