Hitch in Planned Expansion of Pforzheim's Deferred Removal Detention Center Pushes Completion Time to 2027

Detention facility expansion for deportees encountering prolonged delay - Substantial Slowdown in Deportation Camp's Growth Plans

Here's the lowdown: the anticipated expansion of the detention center for individuals facing removal in Pforzheim has hit a significant roadblock. What was initially supposed to be a 2021 project, expanding the center from its current 51 places to a whopping 80, will not be completed until spring 2027. Uh-oh!

Why the holdup, you ask? Apparently, it's all down to unanticipated issues during the planning and construction phases, along with the challenge of carrying out the work while the center remains operational. And if that wasn’t enough, the planning firms commissioned for the job didn't exactly excel in their duties, either. But hey, that 68-detention-place milestone will be achieved come this fall, according to the Ministry of Finance.

Remember when this renovation was supposed to wrap up ages ago? Unfortunately, it's been delayed time and time again since the center opened its doors back in 2016 with a mere 36 places. Now, with the cost rising from the initial 9 million euros to a whopping 13 million, it's safe to say this project hasn't been cheap.

But why all the fuss about a few extra detention spots? Simple: the occupancy rate is skyrocketing, largely due to an overall increase in deportations across the southwest region. And the system is feeling the squeeze - in May this year, the center was running at full capacity with 45 people accommodated daily. Since the start of 2020, these facilities have been consistently utilized. It's unclear whether any removals have been postponed due to a lack of space.

As of April 30th, around 23,700 individuals currently residing in Baden-Württemberg find themselves in a tough spot, facing removal but with their departure temporarily halted—for instance, in cases like Syria where deportation isn't feasible.

By May 31st, approximately 1,580 people from the southwest had been removed. In 2020, the number of removals was at around 1,130 by the same date.

So there you have it: a much-needed expansion for the Detention Center for Deferred Removal in Pforzheim will be delayed until April 2027, and could cost more than initially planned. Crikey!

The delay in the expansion of Pforzheim's Deferred Removal Detention Center is now projected to finish in spring 2027, a significant shift from the initial 2021 timeline. This delay is due to various challenges during the planning and construction phases, ongoing work amid the operational center, and subpar performance by the commissioning planning firms.

The anticipated expansion aims to increase the center's capacity from 51 to 80 places, yet the initial budget, set at 9 million euros, has risen to 13 million due to the project's numerous complications. As the occupancy rate rises and deportations increase in the southwest region, there is mounting pressure to complete this expansion.
