Streamlining Waste Sorting: A Path to Financial Savings

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has launched a new waste-separation campaign called "This House Doesn't Mix Waste", aimed at encouraging residents to properly sort their waste in exchange for discounts on trash collection fees. The initiative, which is part of a broader effort to enhance waste management practices in the city, is set to begin registration on August 1 and officially roll out in October.

## Key Components

The campaign encourages participants to separate their waste into four categories: food waste, recyclables, hazardous waste, and general waste. This is essential for the campaign's effectiveness. Participants who join the campaign can receive a discount on their monthly waste collection fees. For example, compliant households may see their fees reduced from 60 baht to 20 baht.

Registration for the campaign can be done via the BKK Waste Pay mobile application or website. Eligible residences include single-family homes, housing estates, condominiums, and flats without juristic persons, producing no more than 20 litres of waste per day. For housing estates and condominium buildings with juristic persons, the group option is available, with each unit adhering to the same daily waste threshold. Each group must provide a centralised waste collection area divided into the four waste categories.

Registered households receive a sticker valid for one year and a green bag for food waste. Compliance with the waste-separation rules is verified through random checks. Failure to comply results in a six-month suspension of the discount benefit.

Residents can report waste issues via the Traffy Fondue complaint receiving platform. As of July 14, a total of 112,601 households have registered for the campaign. Registered households can be found on the app's map, improving waste collection service quality.

This campaign is expected to improve environmental sustainability and quality of life for residents in Bangkok. The BMA hopes that the initiative will foster a culture of waste separation and recycling, contributing to a greener and cleaner city.

Science and environmental science play a significant role in the "This House Doesn't Mix Waste" campaign, as it follows the principles of waste management – the process of collecting, transporting, processing, recycling, and disposing of waste – to ensure proper sorting and reduce environmental impact. Financial incentives in the form of discounted trash collection fees for businesses and households adhering to the waste-separation rules encourage participation and financial sustainability.
