State education expenses for children rise over £500 within a span of three years
Crunching Numbers: Steep Rise in UK State School Fees
Between the lines of your wallet, the cost of sending kids to state school has seen a jarring £520 surge in the last three years! That's right — you're now shelling out around £2,275 annually for a secondary state school education in Britain, according to a recently published report by the Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) and the Centre for Research in Social Policy (CRSP).
The bills for primary school have also seen a hefty 16% hike and now stand at over £1,000 a year. To paint a starker picture, similar research conducted in 2022 pegged secondary school fees at £1,755 and primary school at nearly £865 yearly.
Paying Up more than Poodle Food! This substantial increase far outmatched both inflation and wage increases during this period, suggest the findings. The main culprits? Higher food prices for kid-friendly lunches and snacks throughout the school day, as well as a growing need for tech required for digital learning.
Additionally, secondary schoolers must fork over extra dough for materials and equipment needed for subjects like design, along with textbooks and stationery.
Plea to Government: Lend a Helping HandCPAG has urged the government to use its forthcoming child poverty strategy to bolster the financial well-being of families. Their battle-cry: help with the school day costs, possibly by expanding free school meals, and dishing out cash support for uniform expenses in England.
"Struggling to keep up with bills while supermarkets siphon cash for school supplies? Your children are missing out on essential activities!," declares Kate Anstey, CPAG's head of education policy. A little help with the cost of school day activities, including a wider distribution of free school meals and assistance with uniform costs, she believes, would bring a sigh of relief to strained parents and their kiddos alike.
Anstey issues a stark warning: "Scrap the two-child limit, or more and more youngsters will find their dreams dashed by the cold grip of poverty."
Putting Families in a Spin with School LifeParents across the UK have shared their concerns about the financial implications on their children’s school experiences, with one mother sharing that her son is often slapped with detentions due to missing school supplies.
A parent from Wales reported their children feeling judged by peers and left out as they can't participate in extra activities because they lack the necessary stationery.
