SSA to End Paper Checks: 390,000 Beneficiaries Affected
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is set to discontinue paper checks from September 30, 2023. This shift, mandated by a 2021 executive order from President Donald Trump, aims to modernize federal payments and benefit both recipients and the agency. As of now, less than 1% of Social Security beneficiaries still receive paper checks. The SSA is actively reaching out to these individuals to guide them through the transition to electronic payments. Recipients can update their payment information on the SSA's website. This change will affect approximately 390,000 beneficiaries. Paper checks are more prone to errors, delays, and fraud. They also incur higher costs compared to electronic payments. The move to digital payments is expected to increase efficiency and transparency in the federal payment system. Starting October 1, 2023, all Social Security payments will be made electronically. Exceptions will be made in emergency situations or for those without access to digital payment systems or banks. Recipients are encouraged to update their payment information on the SSA's website to ensure a smooth transition.
