SSA prepares for September grant distributions, examinations to intensify

With the September 2025 grant payments approaching, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is preparing for a critical period. The ongoing review process and the ending contract with PostBank, the current payment service provider for SASSA grants, could lead to delays or disruptions in grant payments[1].

Grant Reviews

Beneficiaries may face potential problems if they do not comply with SASSA’s re-registration or review requests before September 2025. It is crucial to update personal information and eligibility status on time to avoid payment interruptions[1]. Over 210,000 beneficiaries have been flagged for potential non-disclosure of additional income, and about 69 recipients in Mahikeng, North West province, were disqualified due to undeclared income[2][3].

PostBank Contract Ending

The conclusion of PostBank’s contract as a payment service provider for SASSA grants in 2025 raises concerns about the transition to a new payment system. Without a smooth changeover, beneficiaries could experience delays or confusion about where and how to collect their grants[1]. Approximately 2 million beneficiaries who get their grants via Postbank could face payment issues.

Payment Dates

Despite these issues, official grant payment dates for September 2025 have been announced. For instance, the Older Persons Grant is scheduled for September 2, and the Disability Grant for September 3, 2025[4][5]. However, any delays caused by the review process or payment provider transition could affect these dates.

Preventing Potential Problems

To minimize potential problems, beneficiaries should ensure their SASSA details are up to date and comply with any review requirements promptly. They should also stay informed about any official announcements regarding alternative payment arrangements following PostBank’s contract expiration. Lastly, beneficiaries should check their status regularly via official SASSA channels[6].

In a statement, SASSA CEO Themba Matlou stated that grants will be lapsed for non-responders or those with outdated personal details[7]. The War veterans grant amount is R2335, the Old age grant amount is R2315, and the Disability Grant amount is R2315[2]. No social grants have been permanently suspended due to this review, but payments may be delayed.

A Public Protector report states that SASSA has not yet made the changes needed to join the national payment system or to choose a new reliable company to handle grant payments[8]. Reviews are intensifying to ensure beneficiaries remain eligible, and beneficiaries selected for review must submit the requested documents[9].
