Spain and Portugal experience significant power disruptions inciting Romanian energy minister's soothing appeals for tranquility
Fresh Take:
Amidst the chaos that struck Iberia recently, Romania's Energy Minister, Sebastian Burduja, took to social media to assure its citizens that the nation's energy system remains stable. The assurance came after a massive power outage plunged Spain and parts of Portugal into darkness on April 28, 2025.
Burduja, a crucial figure in the Romanian government, emphasized the country's ability to cover its energy demands while exporting over 200MW. He appreciated the efforts of the energy experts watching the situation closely and handling turbulent situations in the past.
The power outage hit Spain hard, disrupting power supply, phone networks, and affecting millions of people. Regions of Portugal and southern France wired into the Spanish grid also faced similar struggles. This blackout resulted in the cancellation of numerous trains and over 500 flights.
As of Tuesday, April 29, Spanish power operator Red Electrica reported that 99.95% of demand had been restored. However, the true cause and rapid spread of the outage still remain uncertain. Portuguese prime minister Luis Montenegro dismissed the possibility of a cyber-attack, as per the BBC report.
It's interesting to note that, based on the information available, there has been no indication of the power outage spreading to Romania.
