This fresh face in Opel's SUV lineup has arrived—the robust, well-priced Frontera. Ideal for families in search of a spacious vehicle with a generous trunk and a practical price tag, the Frontera fits the bill perfectly.

The Frontera exudes space even before you climb aboard. It's an affordable family SUV tailor-made for those seeking a combination of practicality and a dash of lifestyle flair. Priced fairly, this crossover could strike a chord for many.

Positioned in the heart of Opel’s large crossover range, the Frontera follows in the footsteps of its smaller sibling, the Mokka, but with a longer body and a more budget-friendly price tag. At 4.39 meters, the Frontera is approximately 25 centimeters larger than the Mokka, and it exhibits a distance of around 25 centimeters from its compact SUV cousin, the Grandland. The budget-conscious Frontera starts at just 24,000 euros, making it a cost-effective option in the face of the Mokka’s 26,700 euros price tag.

Money-Saving Moves, Stylish Results

Opel appears to have prioritized cost reduction with the Frontera, but it’s hardly evident at first glance. In higher trim levels, the Frontera presents a stylish appearance on the outside. Our test vehicle came with a handsome two-toned finish, complete with a white roof and white steel wheels offset by a deep green body. The classic SUV shape of the Frontera is reinforced further by its angular silhouette.

A 460-liter trunk with an expandable space of up to 1,600 liters when the rear seats are folded down offers impressive roominess. The flat loading floor and under-the-floor storage compartment mean loading daily essentials is a breeze. Although a third row of seats for combustion engine models can be added, it’s likely only children will appreciate the addition.

Charming Cabin, Modest Quality

The interior of the Frontera initially appears sleek, boasting a user-friendly layout and thoughtful design elements like graphics subtly etched onto the rubber bands securing loose items to the center console. A closer inspection, however, reveals somewhat lackluster quality—especially on the doors and dashboard, where hard plastic surfaces predominate. Opel has also opted for cost-saving measures in areas beyond the driver’s view, making it possible to peer into the vehicle's inner workings beneath the steering wheel.

The seats may be on the firm side, but they offer adequate comfort and some side support. The one potential shortcoming might be the limited length of the seat cushion for average-sized drivers.

Pop the hood, and you’ll discover a 1.2-liter gasoline engine with mild hybrid technology under the Frontera’s bonnet, delivering 107 kW/145 PS. This engine is paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission and always drives the front wheels. Although the Frontera demonstrates solid and composed performance on the road, those seeking a more spirited driving experience may want to look elsewhere.

The electric hybrid motor enhances the Frontera’s swift start and immediate response and even provides propulsion for short distances with low power demands. City driving reveals respectable fuel consumption values of about 5 liters per 100 kilometers. The more demanding highway cruising sees gasoline consumption increase to around 7 liters or higher. In the larger scheme, the Frontera is expected to deliver average fuel efficiency, with a high 6-value. Despite the notable motor noise at higher speeds, it never reaches an unpleasant crescendo.

Buying the Base Frontera requires sacrificing some essential features like central displays, where a phone holder and app controls for radio and navigation functions are supplied instead. Entry-level features do include rear parking assistance and metallic paint. Those seeking the Frontera as their first car would likely opt for the "GS" version, which boasts touchscreen control, a two-tone paint scheme, and a rearview camera—at a price tag of 27,400 euros, making the higher-powered model still reasonably priced.

Only the Dacia Duster out-prices the Frontera, while the technologically related Citroen C3 Aircross competes on par regarding average-priced offerings, and the Chinese MG ZS struggles to keep up in the higher trim levels.

Looking for an affordable car that provides ample space and a roomy trunk? Opel’s sporty new crossover could well be the solution. The budget-friendly Frontera may not match the price-performance of its stablemates, Mokka, and Grandland, in terms of solidity and luxury, but it certainly outshines them in terms of affordability. With city and short-distance driving in mind, more car may not always be necessary.
