SpaceX Seeks to Incorporate Starbase as a City
SpaceX, the aerospace manufacturer led by CEO Elon Musk, has filed its first official request to incorporate Starbase, its South Texas facility, into a city. The move aims to support the company's mission to make humanity multiplanetary and streamline development of essential services for its employees.
The proposed incorporation seeks to simplify the creation of housing, schools, medical facilities, and other crucial amenities for the growing Starbase workforce, which currently stands at around 3,400 full-time employees and contractors. SpaceX has already been managing several public functions in the area and could transition these to public governance upon incorporation.
Musk's desire to transform the area into a community supporting SpaceX's mission is not new. He has been vocal about his vision for Starbase for years, even moving SpaceX's headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to the Texas site earlier this year. The incorporation filing comes amid Musk's broader shift of operations to Texas, drawn by its business-friendly environment.
SpaceX has submitted a formal request to hold a local election to decide on the incorporation of Starbase. The Texas Local Government Boundary Commission has received the application. If successful, Starbase will become an officially designated city, paving the way for its development as the future headquarters for both SpaceX and Musk's social media platform, X.
