Sony Honda Mobility Pushing Self-Driving Vehicle Limits with Future-Proof E&E Architecture

Sony Honda Mobility is pushing the boundaries of self-driving vehicles and electrical and electronic (E&E) architecture. The company is focusing on hardware enhancements and cloud implementation to create a future-proof automotive experience.

Sony Honda Mobility is exploring three main E&E Architecture designs: Domain, Zone, and Central. The Zone and Central Architectures are seen as the future for self-driving vehicles. E&E architecture connects automobile control units and sensors, enabling software-defined vehicle development.

The company aims to develop E&E architecture without hardware limitations. This will support future automotive experiences, with a focus on In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) and Autonomous Driving/Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (AD/ADAS). High-spec SoC processing is crucial for minimizing hardware constraints and supporting rapid technological advancements in automated driving.

Hyundai Motor Company, another industry leader, is also developing an E&E architecture without hardware limitations. By 2026, Hyundai aims to support advanced battery management systems and cloud-based diagnostics. This will enhance safety, performance, and future automotive experiences through scalable and flexible technology integration.

The next-generation E&E Architecture integrates and consolidates software into a single ECU for streamlined vehicle functionality and reduced wiring. Sony Honda Mobility uses Qualcomm Technologies' Snapdragon® Digital Chassis™ SoC, offering up to 800 TOPS computational performance.

Both Sony Honda Mobility and Hyundai Motor Company are investing in the future of E&E architecture. By minimizing hardware limitations and maximizing cloud implementation, they aim to create safer, more efficient, and more enjoyable automotive experiences.
