Solar panels installed on aged rooftops: these innovative PV modules are operative
Affordable Solar Power: SunOyster Systems' Lightweight Modules Revolutionise Energy Production
In a groundbreaking development, SunOyster Systems, a start-up founded by Rajat Bhargava and Rohit Bhargava, has introduced lightweight PV modules that are transforming the solar energy landscape. The company, recently recognised as a winner in a start-up competition by Galp in Lisbon, is making waves in the industry with their innovative product.
These lightweight modules, weighing just 5 kg per square meter, are ideal for generating affordable solar power from load-bearing limited roofs. This makes them particularly suitable for older roofs on agricultural operations that cannot support the load of a standard PV system.
The benefits of these modules extend beyond their light weight. They are equipped with a front made of tempered glass, ensuring durability and efficiency. The first pilot project using these lightweight modules was realised quickly, demonstrating their ease of installation.
One of the most compelling advantages of these modules is their cost-effectiveness. In Portugal, a kilowatt hour of electricity generated by these modules costs around 3 Euro cents. Similarly, in Germany, solar power can be generated for under 5 Euro cents per kilowatt hour on larger roofs with these lightweight PV modules.
These cost savings translate into significant financial returns for projects using these modules. A 45 kWp solar plant, for instance, can generate a cash flow of 100,000 euros over 20 years. High self-consumption of solar power generated by these modules can result in a project payback time of 5 years.
Moreover, the use of these lightweight modules can save 600 tonnes of CO2. This environmental benefit, coupled with the financial gains, makes these modules an attractive proposition for businesses and homeowners alike.
Interestingly, petrol stations, which have a high electricity consumption of around 100,000 kWh per year, could greatly benefit from these lightweight modules. SunOyster Systems has proposed their use for petrol station roofs, offering a sustainable and cost-effective solution to these energy-intensive establishments.
However, it's important to note that switching a photovoltaic system to self-consumption can be worthwhile, but the specifics depend on various factors. Nonetheless, SunOyster Systems' lightweight PV modules are undeniably a step in the right direction towards affordable, sustainable, and accessible solar energy. With external capital investment, the amortization of equity capital for these projects can drop to one year, further enhancing their appeal.
As we continue to grapple with climate change and rising energy costs, innovations like SunOyster Systems' lightweight PV modules offer a glimmer of hope for a greener, more affordable future.
