Social Security Payments Unaffected by Shutdown, COLA Announcement Delayed
The ongoing government shutdown is causing concern among Social Security recipients. However, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed that regular payments will continue uninterrupted. A potential disruption, though, is the delay in announcing the cost-of-living adjustment for mid-October.
Social Security payments, including both retirement and disability benefits, are set to proceed as usual. This includes the October payments that have started to be disbursed. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, which aids aged, blind, and disabled individuals with limited income and resources, will also follow its regular schedule.
SSI recipients should expect two payments in October. The first will be made on Oct. 1, as usual, for October's benefits. Due to the calendar, a second payment will be made on Oct. 31 for November's benefits. This occurs when the first of the month falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, as is the case this year.
While Social Security payments remain unaffected by the government shutdown, the announcement of the cost-of-living adjustment for mid-October may be delayed. Recipients can rest assured that their regular payments will continue, with the SSI program even providing two payments in October.
