Social Forestry venture Fairventures secures S$1 million in The Liveability Challenge, plans to expand their social forestry blueprint

The Liveability Challenge 2022, a global platform that connects investors and entrepreneurs with innovative sustainability solutions, has announced Fairventures Social Forestry (FSF) as its winner. This start-up, focused on social forestry, secured up to S$1 million in project funding for their groundbreaking work.

FSF's sustainability model is centered on environmentally friendly forestry that combines fair economic conditions with active local community participation. Their approach fosters sustainable agricultural and forestry practices that serve as a replicable example for future projects in Southeast Asia.

The Liveability Challenge 2022 focused on three themes: Decarbonisation, Food & Agritechnology, and Nature-based Solutions. FSF's model addresses decarbonisation by promoting forest regeneration and sustainable land management, helping sequester carbon and restore degraded landscapes. In terms of food and agritechnology, FSF encourages the integration of sustainable agricultural practices within forest management landscapes.

In terms of nature-based solutions, FSF leverages the ecological restoration of forests as a key strategy to improve biodiversity, support livelihoods, and mitigate climate change impacts. The model’s emphasis on inclusive governance and community stewardship reflects principles of nature-based solutions by balancing ecological health with human well-being and economic needs.

Ecosperity Week 2022, a gathering of global business leaders, policymakers, investors, and civil society, took place on 7-9 June in a hybrid format. Themed "Accelerating Action at Scale", the event delved into real solutions and key levers to accelerate the energy revolution, decarbonise transport and heavy industries, and finance Asia's green transition.

Several other finalists also received investment offers from participating funds, demonstrating the importance of such events in driving sustainable innovation. It's crucial to note that Asia Pacific is the most vulnerable region to climate calamity, with increasingly heavy storms and floods costing billions and disrupting millions of lives. Globally, greenhouse gas emissions need to peak within three years and rapidly fall thereafter to keep global warming to around 1.5 degrees Celsius. Temasek Foundation, which supports a diverse range of programmes that uplift lives and communities, both in Singapore and beyond, plays a significant role in addressing these challenges.

Fairventures Social Forestry received additional investments of S$100,000 by PlanetRise and S$50,000 by Quest Ventures.

In conclusion, the success of FSF at The Liveability Challenge 2022 underscores the potential for sustainable innovation in addressing climate change and promoting community-driven solutions. The future of Southeast Asia's forests and the planet as a whole may well lie in the hands of cooperative, community-focused initiatives such as FSF's.
