Say Goodbye to Cash-Outs at Shell Stations? Here's the Scoop

Withdrawal Service Shortage: Insufficient Funds at Shell Fuel Stations for Cash Withdrawals - Shell Stations End Cash Transactions: Pick-Up Services Only
Get ready to carry more cards instead of cash! According to the "Cologne City Newspaper" (KSTA), you might soon be tossing cash out of your wallet due to a potential discontinuation of cash withdrawals at Shell gas stations. The Cash Group (Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Postbank) is planning to pull the plug on this service by the end of June, as per the report.
Cash-Outs Without Minimum Spending, but With Fees
Around 1300 Shell stations won’t offer cash withdrawals anymore, allowing customers to take out up to 1000 Euros, no minimum spend, but with the standard ATM fee if your bank isn't part of the Cash Group. However, it's still unclear if there will be a new collaboration with other banks in the future.
As for Cash Group customers, cash-outs could become more of a challenge post-Shell. Some banks, including Postbank and Deutsche Bank, are planning to close about half of their branches by the end of 2026.
Fewer ATMs Means Fewer Options
The number of ATMs is dropping like flies: in 2018, we had around 59,000 nationwide, but by 2023, it shrunk to 51,000, and it's still falling. The move towards digital payments and the rise in ATM explosions might be the culprits behind this decline.

Info Bonus:Searches for Shell’s banking collaborations, cash withdrawal alternatives, or arrangements didn't yield any results in the search data available. So, there’s no official word on other banks stepping in to provide cash withdrawals at Shell locations following the Cash Group's service termination.
- The potential discontinuation of cash withdrawals at Shell gas stations could lead to an increase in the use of credit and debit cards among customers, aligning with the wider trend of digital payments in the industry.
- The progressive decline in the number of ATMs could make it more difficult for Cash Group customers to withdraw cash, given that several banks, such as Deutsche Bank and Postbank, are planning to close a significant number of branches by the end of 2026.
