Round-the-clock accessibility in Madrid
The Regional Government of the Community of Madrid is planning to approve a draft bill that grants all shops, regardless of activity or size, the freedom to open every Sunday and public holiday of the year. This measure, part of the draft Law on the dynamization of commerce, is intended to stimulate commerce in the region and could create around 20,500 jobs, according to the regional government.
With this new regulation, Madrid will be the only autonomous community with total freedom of trading hours in shops. The traders will have complete autonomy in deciding their trading days, with no interference from the regional government. This includes the power to decide public holidays on which they will operate, as well as the trading days across the entire Community of Madrid.
The new trading hours will apply to all public holidays of the year, and the regional government does not impose any restrictions on the trading hours for public holidays. The traders will be responsible for deciding their trading days, with no legal limitations throughout the Community of Madrid.
The sector in question has been damaged by the fall in consumption caused by the economic crisis. The regional administration believes both large and small traders will benefit from the new regulation, as it encourages consumers to shop in small nearby shops, according to the community.
The approval of this measure is expected in March. The regional government also claims that the measure could increase the GDP by almost six tenths. The bill is not explicitly linked to a specific Regional Minister, but it is clear that the regional government aims to promote free trade hours to boost local commerce in the Community of Madrid.
