Romanian gas production to potentially double thanks to Neptun Deep project, Minister announces, estimating EUR 20 billion economic benefits
📢 Boom time ahead for Romania's energy sector! 🚀
Romania is all set to double its gas production and rake in a whopping EUR 20 billion with the Neptun Deep project in the Black Sea, as per energy minister Sebastian Burduja. The announcement was made during a government meeting on March 27.
At the heart of it all, the Neptun Deep project will be putting at least 100 billion standard cubic meters of gas to work. Here's a fun fact for you: Romania currently produces and consumes about 8-10 billion cubic meters of gas annually, and with Neptun Deep, they're aiming to triple their current reserves!
Sebastian Burduja added that the project represents a colossal EUR 4 billion investment, making it the largest investment in Romania's energy sector. It's a joint venture between 50% OMV Petrom and 50% Romgaz.
As if that's not exciting enough, gas consumption in Romania is expected to skyrocket by at least 25-30% in the coming years, thanks mainly to an increase in homes connected to the gas network and the development of large gas-fired power plants.
One such power plant is the Mintia power plant – a massive facility slated to become the largest gas-fired power plant in the European Union, with a capacity of 1,750 MW, even outdoing the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. Add to that the Iernut power plant, currently 97% complete, as well as Ișalnița and Turceni, and you've got another 1,300 MW of power on the horizon. All these power plants will run on gas, creating massive opportunities for increased production while simultaneously meeting the anticipated rise in demand.
The Neptun Deep project's natural gas reserves will also contribute significantly to key sectors like the country's chemical fertilizer production, pharmaceutical industry, and more.
However, the enthusiasm for the Neptun Deep project hasn't been universally shared. Environmental NGOs in Romania have been vocal about their opposition, raising concerns about the project's potential impact on the environment. Despite this, the project continues to enjoy government support. Prime minister Marcel Ciolacu recently signaled his support for the Neptun Deep project and minister Sebastian Burduja, highlighting the discomfort of opposition coming from both NGOs and supposed "Russian allies" who don't want Romania to become a major gas supplier. >>Learn more about the Neptun Deep project's status, impact, and regional implications here (Photo source: Inquam Photos | George Calin)

The Neptun Deep project, a significant EUR 4 billion investment, is set to revolutionize Romania's energy sector by increasing gas production and contributing to a rise in gas consumption by 25-30%. This joint venture between OMV Petrom and Romgaz, upon completion, will result in a vast increase in gas reserves, benefiting sectors like chemical fertilizer production, pharmaceuticals, and businesses which rely on stable energy sources such as oil-and-gas. However, the project has faced opposition from environmental NGOs, expressing concerns over potential environmental impact. Despite this, the project continues to receive government support, notably from prime minister Marcel Ciolacu, who has expressed his support for the project.
