Restoration Decision for Rosseltalbahn Railway in Saarbrücken Regional Council

The Regional Assembly of the Saarbrücken Regional Association will convene on April 10, 2025, at 3:00 PM in Room 4 of the Volkshochschule at Saarbrücken Castle Square, to discuss a resolution on the revival of the Rosseltalbahn, also known as the Bistalbahn.

The motion, jointly submitted by Die Linke, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, and Bunt.Saarland für Alle faction, aims to express a position on the significance of reactivating the Rosseltalbahn as an infrastructure measure in public passenger transport (ÖPNV). The resolution supports the revival of the railway line between Saarbrücken and Großrosseln via Gersweiler and Fürstenhausen, which is considered a relevant measure in terms of traffic policy and ecology.

The applicants, including regional transport authorities, local municipalities, and environmental groups (though not explicitly listed), believe that the revival of the Rosseltalbahn could help to relieve commuter traffic in the areas of Geislautern, Stangenmühle, and the Klarenthal motorway exit. Moreover, they anticipate a reduction in traffic-related emissions and improved accessibility for lower-income population groups.

Criticism has been directed at the minimum planning and construction time of at least twelve years proposed by the state government. The applicants suggest that the construction time for the Rosseltalbahn should be shortened. They argue that the reintroduction of regular rail services is expected to halve the travel time on this connection to approximately 22 minutes.

The reactivation of the Rosseltalbahn may also promote tourism in the Velden area. If approved, the revived railway line could connect the former exhibition grounds industrial estate in Saarbrücken, potentially boosting economic growth and enhancing the region's appeal to visitors.

The public session of the Regional Assembly offers citizens the opportunity to learn about the traffic policy objectives of the Regional Assembly. The discussion on the revival of the Rosseltalbahn is expected to be lively and informative, providing insights into the region's plans to improve its transportation infrastructure and reduce its carbon footprint.
