The historic Chapel of St. Valentine in Duppenweiler, Beckingen, is undergoing a significant renovation, a project that began in 2021. This chapel, with its rich history dating back to the 12th century, has been a popular meeting place and a hub for cultural activities in the community.

The renovation project is backed by various funding sources, including the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Saarland's funds, within the framework of the "Directive for the Promotion of Sustainable Village Development in the Saarland".

The Environment Ministry is contributing 65% of the eligible costs for the renovation, with 18,366.56 euros coming from the EAFRD and 24,346.37 euros from the Saarland's funds. The Interior Ministry is also contributing, covering an additional 25% of the total costs, amounting to 16,428.05 euros.

The municipality of Beckingen is making a financial contribution to the project, pledging 6,571.22 euros. Minister Petra Berg, in her consideration of tradition and faith as crucial to local identity, has expressed her support for the project.

The planned renovation aims to preserve the long history of the chapel while making it accessible for future generations. The work includes a new slate roof, gutter repair, restoration of the roof cross, and painting work on the facade.

The annual pilgrimage on the Sunday after Valentine's Day remains the highlight of the chapel, a tradition that is expected to continue post-renovation. The renovation of the Valentinuskapelle is a testament to the community's commitment to preserving its heritage and promoting sustainable development.
