Reinickendorf's Cité Foch receives plans for an expansion, adding 88 new apartments to the location
In the heart of Berlin-Reinickendorf, a significant construction project is underway, transforming the historic Cité Foch into a modern residential quarter. The Federal Office for Real Estate (BImA) is spearheading the project, which includes the construction of eleven new residential buildings along Rue Montesquieu.
Last week, the foundation stone was laid for 88 apartments at Rue Montesquieu, marking a significant milestone in the project. The new apartments, designed for federal civil servants, are being built using modular construction methods, ensuring resource-efficient and eco-friendly development.
The Cité Foch, once a residential area for the French forces in Berlin and their dependents between 1952 and 1976, has seen a revival since German reunification. The property fell to the Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben, which carried out urgently needed renovation work from the early 2000s onwards. This renovation effort has significantly reduced the vacancy rate in the Cité Foch from over 30 percent to under seven percent.
The current project in the Cité Foch is one of the largest ongoing residential construction projects in Berlin-Reinickendorf, with a total of 600 new apartments planned. The project also includes a new school, kindergarten, and public playground, making it a comprehensive development that caters to the needs of the community.
The new residential quarter is being built on the site of a former sports field. The previously private streets will be renovated by BImA and then taken over by the Reinickendorf district and converted into public streets. The BImA also plans to develop the parking garage into a mobility hub, offering car-sharing options, bike parking spaces, and various services.
However, the initiative Initiative Waidmannslust has criticised the lack of new bus lines planned for the densified Cité Foch. The Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing (Senatsverwaltung für Stadtentwicklung, Bauen und Wohnen) is responsible for planning the traffic concept for the planned residential quarter. The district, however, currently sees no reason to create additional public transport offers for the future densified Cité Foch.
Despite this, the project is a significant step towards providing affordable housing for federal employees and revitalising the Cité Foch. As construction continues, the community looks forward to the completion of this ambitious project.
