Regulation of Ticket Pricing in Germany to Take Effect Starting 2027
The Transport Ministers' Conference, held in Munich, has made a unanimous decision to increase the price of the nationwide Germany ticket for local transport. From January 1, 2026, the ticket will cost 63 euros.
The federal government and the federal states will jointly provide funds for the Germany ticket from 2027. Each party will contribute 1.5 billion euros annually, with the federal government committing to this contribution until 2030. This decision aims to ensure financing stability for the Germany ticket.
Stefan Schnorr, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport, stated that there is clarity that the ticket will continue permanently. He also mentioned that there will be no more uncertainty about financing for the Germany ticket.
The cost index for the Germany ticket will be developed by the Transport Ministers' Conference. Factors such as wage and energy costs will be taken into account in this index. From 2027, the price of the Germany ticket will be based on this cost index.
Users and transport companies will have clarity about the price of the Germany ticket from 2027. The Transport Ministers' Conference did not announce any changes in the ticket price increase effectiveness date beyond 2026.
Bavaria's Transport Minister, Christian Bernreiter (CSU), announced this after the Transport Ministers' Conference in Munich. The federal government has pledged funds for the coming years for the Germany ticket, despite tight budgets.
The Germany ticket has led to revenue losses for transport companies due to previous, more expensive subscriptions. However, the new funding arrangement is expected to address this issue.
The Transport Ministers' Conference did not discuss the potential impact of the funding on the ticket price beyond 2030, nor did they disclose any plans for adjusting the cost index for the Germany ticket after 2027.
Schnorr also emphasised that there is a political price-finding process for the Germany ticket that is soon coming to an end. The Conference did not discuss the specific amount the states will contribute annually after 2030.
The decision to increase the Germany ticket price and secure funding until 2030 is a significant step towards ensuring the long-term sustainability of local transport in Germany.
