Reduced energy expenses: Persistently decreasing producer prices in Germany

Hang out with friends on Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, or E-Mail, or Print this out, and here's something to chew on: manufacturer prices in Germany are on a steady sliding scale. The Federal Statistical Office dished the deets - manufacturers of various products, from chow to industrial goods, slashed their prices by an average of 1.2% in May compared to last year [1][2][3]. The experts over at Reuters guessed this very number, following a 0.9% decrease in April. So, what's the cause of this price cut? Lower energy prices are pulling the strings!

Energy ain't cheap, but it was 6.7% cheaper in May compared to the year before. Not just that, intermediate goods also took a nosedive in cost. However, economist Cyrus de la Rubia of the Hamburg Commercial Bank points out that this drastic decline in producer prices in May is more of a rearview mirror viewing: "With the war between Israel and Iran, energy prices, particularly oil and gas prices, have skyrocketed compared to May." That's right! Brent crude oil is now approximately 25% higher than its average price in May, a fact that'll be evident in overall energy prices in June.

Producer prices haven't been much of a spectacle, according to this expert: "There's a regular mix of price hikes and price drops. So, we're seeing a normalization." Consumer and capital goods went up in price in May, compared to the previous year. If we disregard energy, producer prices increased by 1.3% compared to last year in May. From April to May, prices fell by 0.2%, which was a tad less than the experts' forecasted 0.3% [2].

The stats keep track of manufacturers' product prices before they hit the wholesale and retail trade. Essentially, the statistics provide early indicators of consumer price changes. With energy costs dropping, Germany's inflation has remained steady in May, with goods and services costing 2.1% more than last year [1]. Food prices continued to propel inflation in May, ticking up by 2.8%.

Considering the declining energy costs and the subsequent price reductions in manufacturer goods, it might be a perfect opportunity for the community to invest in vocational training for individuals interested in the industry. This could potentially lead to employment opportunities, thereby boosting business and supporting the local economy. Additionally, the surplus cash generated by these cost savings could be allocated towards finance initiatives such as funding research and development in energy sectors, aiming for further improvements and cost reductions in the long run.
