Restructuring of the rail system is underway - Railway modification process initiated
Deutsche Bahn Seeks New CEO as Lutz Steps Down
In a significant move, the new federal government has announced a restructuring of the supervisory board and the railway board at Deutsche Bahn (DB), aiming to incorporate more specialized expertise and achieve streamlining. This decision comes as Richard Lutz, the CEO of the railway company, steps down from his position.
Lutz, who has been leading the DB since the beginning of 2017 and previously served as CFO from 2010 to 2017, will continue to lead the railway company until a successor is found. However, as of the latest information available, no successor has yet been named or publicly identified for the CEO position at Deutsche Bahn following Lutz's premature departure. The company and the Federal Transport Ministry are currently in the process of finding the right candidate, with several railway experts reportedly rejecting the job offer so far.
The problems at the DB run deep, and there is general support for the long-term renovation course for infrastructure among critics of the railway management. The renovation program includes general renovations aimed at modernizing more than 40 heavily traveled routes by the mid-2030s. Matthias Gastel, a Green politician, has criticized Lutz's departure, stating that it won't solve the problems at the DB. Instead, Gastel believes stronger control and steering by the federal government, along with more money, are necessary for improvement at the state-owned company.
The Minister of Transport, Patrick Schnieder, will present a new strategy for the state-owned railway company on September 22. Schnieder has stated that the railway company must become faster, slimmer, more powerful, and more profitable. However, Gastel has expressed concerns about the railway's financial planning, suggesting that it would halt expansion and new construction projects, and stall electrification and digitization.
The restructuring appears to have begun, with the Minister wanting to present the new strategy and possibly the new CEO on September 22. Several potential successors to Lutz have been mentioned, including Evelyn Palla, Joerg Kukies, and Philipp Nagl. The new CEO will have a challenging task ahead, as they will need to address the deep-seated problems at the DB and implement the new strategy to ensure the success of the railway company.
